Posted @withregram • @rogerjoneslittlebedwyn Every year I get sent the @gimblettgravels Annual Vintage Selection’ highlighting the very best Cabernets and Syrah from this unique region in New Zealand.
The selection is chosen annually by Andrew Caillard MW to represent the vintage. The Selection is the fourteenth release, the first being in 2008.
The idea is to share and gain a perspective of where Gimblett Gravels stand in a given year, and chart the progress and evolution of this region.
I first became aware of the World Class quality of these Gimblett Gravels wines in 2009 at a Bordeaux & Gimblett Gravels Master Class hosted in London, prior to this my wine love of New Zealand was based on Pinots from Central Otago and some unique wines from Martinborough, outside the popular influence of Sauvignon Blanc.
At the 2009 blind master class numerous top wines from Bordeaux were put up against the same from Gimblett Gravels, with the New Zealand wines averaging £19.00 a bottle retail, the French had a norm of £800.00 a bottle, the results 2 Gimblett Gravels in the top six; Sacred Hill – The Helmsman 2006 and Newton Forrest Cornerstone 2006, with the Bordeaux wines including; Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2005 Mouton Rothschild 2005 and Chateau Haut-Brion 2005.
More importantly than who won, was that this ‘little region’, once dismissed as useless land by sheep farmers, has now evolved into a world beater, in such a short period.
I have visited the Region twice and seen

We were far (far!) from the fastest in the block (the contractors gave us many smiles of encouragement while no doubt stifling a scoff of laughter), but as our too-kind Estate Manager claimed, “many hands make light work.” Right? 😉
A wonderful morning with incredible fruit that the team should be very proud of. Can hand on heart vouch for the quality of what will be the 2024 @smithandsheth Cantera - now, it’s in the hands of the winemakers 🍇 ➡️🍷
