The usual 12-bottle lineup was reduced to just 6 for this vintage — a reflection of the challenging 2023 vintage. The selection includes 2 Syrah and 4 Cabernet/Merlot blends.

Many of the flagship wines were not produced. Yet these bottles prove the enduring magic of Gimblett Gravels: fewer wines, but great quality.

The two Syrahs stood out with elegance, power, and structure, while the Cabernet/Merlot blends delivered vibrant fruit, gentle oak complexity, and impressive value.

A smaller lineup, but a clear reminder of what makes Gimblett Gravels so special.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with @winebyjennydobson about the remarkable story of Gimblett Gravels.
With more than 40 vintages of experience, Jenny shared her insights openly, reflecting on both the challenges and triumphs that shape this extraordinary wine region.
Many wrote of the 2023 vintage in the context of the season’s dramatic weather events — cyclones, heavy rain, and the undeniable force of nature.
Yet these wines, and the people behind them, demonstrate that with exceptional vineyards and skilled producers, it is still possible to prevail and craft wines of focus, elegance, and precision.
Rather than highlighting a single bottle, what stood out to me across the 2023 wines was their remarkable purity of fruit. The poise and clarity Jenny spoke about during our conversation truly show in the glass.
Whether it’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, fruit-forward Merlot and Malbec, or savoury, umami-driven Syrah, each wine reflects both the character of the vintage and the resilience of the region.
I would love to see more Gimblett Gravels wines in people’s glasses.
They are truly special wines that speak not only of the land they come from, but also of the people who craft them.
One day I hope to visit the Gravels myself and experience these wines in their home — this beautiful corner of New Zealand.

Get @reshare_app • @christinakpickard Tasting the 2023 Gimblett Gravel Annual Selection is a particularly moving exercise in memory, having seen the devastating aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, which, off the back of two earlier deluges, tore through New Zealand’s North Island in February 2023, right before harvest.

Subsequently, the 2023 selection is the smallest release in the 16 years of annual vintage selections, with just six wines instead of 12, which is entirely understandable; That anyone produced quality wine under the circumstances is testament to the region’s resilience, teamwork and talent.

The free-draining Gimblett Gravels soils fared better from the rain than other parts, and the late-ripening nature of the red varieties meant that pickers weren’t in the middle of harvest when the weather goddesses reared their heads in anger.

Overall, I thought the two Syrahs shone brightest, achieving lovely perfume and drinkability. But across the board wines reflected the season, with balance and honesty.
