This vintage was a true test of resilience. Viticulturists worked tirelessly to produce ripe, clean fruit in a challenging wet year, whilewinemakers skillfully crafted wines that reflect the unique character of the season.

The blended reds, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, showcase a wider variety of grapes this year, including higher portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Tempranillo.
The results are stunning. I was particularly impressed by the @churchroad1 Malbec,
@squawking_magpie The Nest,
@trinityhillwines The Gimblett.

The Syrah selection also demonstrates the winemakers’ skill in building texture and complexity. While not as powerful as in previous year, these Syrahs are beautifully crafted and enjoyable. The two wines from @stonecroftwinehb are exceptional examples of the vintage and the style.

Posted @withregram • @nzsomm The Gimblett Gravels 2022 Annual Vintage Selection presents a picture of vintage 2022, which held many challenges for the vineyards in terms of rain during autumn and resulting humidity,  but is a triumph when the wines are tasted in glass.
The member vineyards of the Gimblett Gravels Association send their top samples to Andrew Caillard MW, based in Australia, who then selects his choice of best wines to characterize the vintage.
We were very fortunate to have Jenny Dobson, winemaker of Squawking Magpie who was able to join our tasting of the 2022 selection.
Jenny spoke with eloquence of the issues that influenced 2022 and how vineyards overcame these to produce an impressive line-up.

The 12 wines were paired with a canape tasting menu prepared by students of the New Zealand School of Food and Wine and the wines and dishes were served by the Diploma of Hospitality students.

With price points starting around $20 for the Villa Maria Selection, a great buy in my view, to the Church Road TOM Syrah at $220. There is something for everyone and many of these wines are ready to drink now.  Here is the line up.
