The night before the auction, we're bringing together the winemakers behind this year's seven full-barrique auction lots for an intimate dinner at Cellar 495.

Over three beautifully matched courses, you'll taste each of these exceptional wines poured by the people who made them, hear the stories behind the lots and discover what makes each wine special before the lots go under the hammer the following day.

For those joining us at the Auction on Saturday, it's also a brilliant opportunity to do a little extra research before deciding which lots might earn a place on your bidding list.

Full Barrique (288 bottles).

Specially created for the 2026 Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction, this very special wine is an assemblage ‘field blend’, donated by members of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association. From the 2025 vintage, each winery has selected the best red grape variety and the best parcels of fruit that the vintage delivered, with each member’s component expertly blended by winemaker James Ostergren.

Members contributing to this wine comprise: Beach House, Church Road, Craggy Range, Čuvar, Elephant Hill, Esk Valley, Mills Reef, Mission Estate, Pask, Smith & Sheth, Squawking Magpie, Trinity Hill, Villa Maria 💫.

Founded in 2001, the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association brings together some of New Zealand’s finest wine producers with a fervent respect for the concept of terroir, combined with modern-day thinking to define, protect and market wine.

Often the amazing vintages in Hawke’s Bay come in twos but no…. 2024, 2025 and now 2026…. All absolute stunners, from Albariño (I would say that 🤣) to Chardonnay, right through to the late reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.

Now that’s something to celebrate I reckon!

The usual 12-bottle lineup was reduced to just 6 for this vintage — a reflection of the challenging 2023 vintage. The selection includes 2 Syrah and 4 Cabernet/Merlot blends.

Many of the flagship wines were not produced. Yet these bottles prove the enduring magic of Gimblett Gravels: fewer wines, but great quality.

The two Syrahs stood out with elegance, power, and structure, while the Cabernet/Merlot blends delivered vibrant fruit, gentle oak complexity, and impressive value.

A smaller lineup, but a clear reminder of what makes Gimblett Gravels so special.
