About Craggy Range Winery
The land on which Craggy Range’s Gimblett Gravels Vineyard now stands has a truly distinctive story. For many years it was owned and farmed by the Gimblett family, used simply as a winter paddock for cattle and sheep. In 1987, an international concrete company purchased the property with plans to operate a gravel quarry. Local vignerons, passionate about the area’s viticultural promise, vigorously advocated for its future as vineyard land. These efforts helped persuade authorities to decline mining consents, and after a decade of pressure the company abandoned its mining plans in 1997. The land was subsequently offered for sale by public tender, and Craggy Range was the successful purchaser.
This acquisition became the foundation of Craggy Range’s wine growing presence in Hawke’s Bay, enablingthe Peabody family to develop a world‑class Estate vineyard and craft wines that express the unique terroir of the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District. This site is also home to our primary production winery with four distinct cellars, state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, and varying fermentation vessels including sandstone, ceramic and concrete tanks. We take a low intervention winemaking approach allow the unique terroir to truly express itself.
